Florida licensed psychologist (PY4489)

Dr. Kalkines is a Jacksonville native and was graduated with a B.A. in Psychology and M.A. in Counseling Psychology from the University of North Florida. He was employed for nine years at a private psychiatric hospital in several roles including Director of Social Services and Director of Administration before entering the Clinical Psychology Program at the University of Denver, School of Professional Psychology where he completed his Doctor of Psychology degree in 1989. In Denver, Dr. Kalkines was employed as a behavioral medicine research assistant at the University of Colorado Department of Family Medicine and in clinical positions at Rose Medical Center, St. Anthony Hospital Systems EAP Program, Aurora Presbyterian Hospital, the University of Denver Student Mental Health Clinic, and in private practice. He accepted a commission as an officer in the U.S. Navy and completed the Clinical Psychology Internship Program at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland before being transferred to Naval Hospital, Orlando. There, Dr. Kalkines directed outpatient mental health services and served as the primary psychological consultant to the prestigious Naval Nuclear Power Schools, which train the technicians and engineers who operate US Navy nuclear reactors. Dr. Kalkines was decorated by the Navy and officially recognized by the American Psychological Association for service with the First Marine Expeditionary Force in Saudi Arabia in Operation Desert Shield. In that role, he was among the first 2000 in-country and was the first US Navy mental health professional deployed to the Southwest Asian theatre of operations in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

 Dr. Kalkines returned to Jacksonville and joined the Byron Harless group in 1992. He has been a principal and President since 1998.   Dr. Kalkines is a psychologist licensed to practice in Florida (PY 4489) and is a member of the Florida Psychological Association, having served as President of the Northeast Florida Chapter.  He is a graduate of the inaugural class of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Citizen's Police Academy. He served as a mayoral appointee to the Victim's Assistance Advisory Council and was a founding member of the Arlington Rotary Club, where he held several leadership positions. 

Dr. Kalkines currently practices primarily in Police and Operational Psychology. He has completed well over 25,000 psychological evaluations for local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, the Department of Defense, and private defense contracting companies. These include psychological evaluations for pre-employment, fitness for duty, return to duty following a critical incident, return to duty following military deployment, fitness for specialized duty (such as ICAC, CFI, SWAT, etc.). Dr. Kalkines has completed Return to Duty evaluations for more than 500 Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) incidents.

Dr. Kalkines served for several years as the psychological consultant to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Negotiator Team. He developed and currently operates a Safeguard Program with several law enforcement agencies to assess and help protect the mental health of officers involved in duties which are potentially psychologically damaging, even to otherwise healthy individuals, such as ICAC, CFI, etc.  

Dr. Kalkines has also served as a forensic psychological expert in cases involving law enforcement agencies.
